Find a Leak - Underground leaks

Hydrogen Gas Method for Underground Water Leaks

The Gas (H2) Method is based on the injection of a low concentration hydrogen gas into the leakage object. Hydrogen gas penetrates leakages more easily than any other medium. Hydrogen gas rises, and even penetrates materials as dense as concrete. H2 is the chemical formula for Hydrogen - the lightest of all gases.

The actual location of the leak is done with a gas detector which is especially designed to detect hydrogen only, and is sensitive enough to react to as small a concentration as 0.0001% hydrogen in the air. Locating leaks in buried pipes is done by using a surface probe with the detector. What about Hydrogen? Is it really safe? Yes, hydrogen is non-poisonous - we already have plenty of it in our bodies - and is not explosive as long as it is sufficiently diluted. Standard mixtures of 5% hydrogen in nitrogen (Forming Gas) are readily available.
